Via Live Action News Note: If you are a father trying to stop an abortion, see this article. If you are a woman who is being pressured into an abortion, go here.

Parenting website Mommyish recently published an article advocating ten reasons (well, actually nine) to have an abortion. In response, I wrote a piece debunking the author’s arguments. Today, I will discuss ten reasons not to have an abortion.

1) It compounds tragedy.

Sometimes the circumstances surrounding a pregnancy are tragic. Perhaps the woman was raped. Maybe the baby has been diagnosed with a defect. Or the woman’s health might be at risk. However, one tragedy is not answered with another. We do not erase a rape by killing a child. We do not cure a baby by taking his life. And we do not avoid all health issues by avoiding the reality of another human being.

Women who have been raped must be compassionately cared for. But compassionate care does not include executing a woman’s child. Parents facing a difficult prenatal diagnosis must be given real facts and directed to others with helpful experiences. They must not be forced into a quick choice for abortion or urged to take the life of their child instead of giving her a chance to defy the odds. Women with high-risk pregnancies must be treated by real medical professionals. But treatment does not include intentionally killing a child. (If a child dies during the course of treating the woman – i.e., during chemotherapy for cancer, removal of an ectopic pregnancy, etc. – this is not an abortion.)

Our children

Mingi.  In Ethiopia, some members of the Hamer and Karo tribes kill mingi children by leaving them alone in the jungle or drowning them in the river.  Drawn From the Water was an orphanage that worked to save these children until they were shut down by an Ethiopian insider who betrayed them.  How does a child become mingi?  Among other ways, by being born a twin…

Missionary Mary Slessor, affectionately known as the “White Queen of Calabar” went to Nigeria in the late 19th century.  She adopted many Nigerian children who were sentenced to die.  Why were they sentenced to die?  Because they were twins…

Throughout ancient history, and in many cultures, twins have been considered bad luck.  Kings would sometimes kill one son so that the other would be free to reign.  Parents would kill one child or give her to a local orphanage so that the “devil’s child” would not remain in their family.  All because these children were twins…

I would estimate that 99.9% of Americans reading this would be shocked with horror.  Why in the world would we kill an innocent baby simply because he or she is a twin?  Well, apparently, a rising trend in America is to kill twins.  In our “modern society”, many women have a selective abortion if they are pregnant with twins or other multiples.  They simply choose which child they want to keep and kill the rest–kill the rest inside the mother’s womb, while the “chosen” child sits and watches his brother or sister be murdered.  Creepy visual, I know, but that’s exactly what happens.

And do we really think the “chosen” child is going to grow up a secure, emotionally healthy individual?  I highly doubt it.  If my parents had killed my twin, I’d personally wonder what I could do someday that would possibly make them want to kill me.  What if they have a younger child later on that they like better?  What if I somehow become inconvenient to their lifestyle?

Be SURE to read this newsbreaking article yourself.  You can find it in the  August 14, 2011 edition of The New York Times Magazine’s cover story, “The Two-Minus-One Pregnancy.”  Go here for selected portions of the article and an explanation.

What are we going to do to stop the rising genocide of twins in America?  What are you going to do?  And how is killing a twin any different from killing any other innocent child?

How well do you know the stages of development for an unborn baby?  Do you know when the heart starts beating?  When the brain waves can be measured?  When all the “ingredients” are there for a new, unique individual?  How about when the baby can suck her thumb?  When he can smile?  Roll around?  When fingernails and toenails start to appear?  No matter how educated you think you are, we should seek to know this information by heart.

Day 1:   On the very first day of fertilization/conception, the baby contains the detailed genetic blueprint for every detail of human development – sex, hair and eye color, height, skin tone, etc.  This child is unique!

Day 22:  The heart starts beating!  (Most women don’t even know they’re pregnant yet.)  I know from personal experience that it is absolutely amazing and life-changing to see or hear the heartbeat of an unborn child on an ultrasound screen.  Every woman should have the opportunity to see and hear this before she makes any decision.  Otherwise, she is not fully informed.

Day 30:  The baby is already 10,000 times larger than she started out!

Six Weeks:  Brain waves can be recorded, which means they’ve been going on for longer than this.

Day 60 (or so):  Near the end of the month the skeleton changes from cartilage to bone. Forty muscle sets begin their first exercises and, working with the nervous system, respond with small movements to touch.

Nine Weeks:  Fingerprints are present.  They never change!

Third Month:  The baby now sleeps, awakens and exercises muscles energetically – turning the head, curling toes and opening and closing his or her mouth. The palm, when stroked, will make a tight fist. Fingernails and toenails form, and the baby’s sex is now identifiable.  Vocal cords are complete…at times it seems as if the baby is crying.
